Does Hypnosis Work
Does hypnosis work? This is one question you must have wrestled with many times. Hypnosis is like any other therapeutic method that is very beneficial to some patients with certain conditions, helpful to a
lesser degree in other patients and a complete failure in a few others.
Hypnosis is highly effective, when the patient is highly motivated to overcome a certain situation or a problem and the hypnotist
is also well trained in both hypnosis and the condition he or she is attempting to cure. Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a
state of deep slumber. Although it does involve a trance like condition, but the subject is in state of high awareness and
concentration.
This state of mind enables the conscious mind to switch off and the sub-conscious mind gets alert. In this state, a trained
hypnotist is able to communicate suggestions and ideas on lifestyle changes to the subject, which get firmly planted in the subject’s
sub-conscious mind.
The unconscious mind stores an enormous amount of information, and this information is used by our conscious mind, to react and
think in the way it does. Sometimes there is a conflict between the conscious and the unconscious mind, which gives rise to problems and
phobias.
Phobias;
To satisfactorily answer the query, does hypnosis work? One must understand how phobias are formed. For example, the conscious
mind is aware that there is no logical reason to be afraid of insects, but the subconscious mind has attached a fear to the insects. So,
when the subconscious mind overrides the conscious mind, phobias develop. In such a situation, a trained hypnotist will use “suggestion
hypnotherapy” to help the subject. The hypnotist will give beneficial suggestion to the subconscious mind and alter the way it thinks and
this responds to the situation.
Hypnoanalysis is another therapeutic method that satisfactorily answers the query does hypnosis work? Hypnoanalysis is also called
as analytical hypnotherapy.
It is a combination of psychoanalysis/psychotherapy used in conjunction with hypnosis. It tries to get to the root of the problem
that is stored in the subconscious mind. The hypnotist exposes the real problem and makes suggestions to the subconscious mind, on how to
deal with it. Once this is done, the symptoms start disappearing thus helping the subject. Treatment of anxiety is a good example of
Hypnoanalysis. Hypnoanalysis is widely used to bring about lasting change in the subject’s condition.

Conclusion;
One only has to look at the various conditions that can be treated with the help of hypnosis to answer the question does Hypnosis
Work? Conditions such as gastrointestinal disorders (ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease), dermatological disorders, acute
pain, allergies, high blood pressure, nausea and vomiting etc can be successfully treated using hypnosis. In some rare cases, hypnosis is
also used in lieu of anesthesia before major surgeries.
While the medical community is in general agreement that hypnosis does work, how it works is still in the realm of
debate.
